McDowell meets GRA to discuss proposed garda reserve

Justice Minister Michael McDowell is meeting with the Garda Representative Association today to discuss his plans to establish a part-time garda reserve.

Mr McDowell is also due to meet the Association of Garda Sergeants and Inspectors tomorrow to discuss the move.

Both associations are opposed to the reserve, which they believe will be poorly trained and is being established as cover for the Government's failure to honour its promise to recruit 2,000 extra gardaí.

Last week, the GRA indicated that it would be willing to negotiate on the issue, but only if Mr McDowell agrees to significantly improve funding and resources for the gardaí.
