Cork manager Conor Counihan has received more bad news on the back of yesterday's Munster SFC final defeat to Kerry.
Ciarán Sheehan, the Rebels' young wing forward, injured his left knee during the second half of the provincial decider in Killarney.
He fell awkwardly when challenging for possession in midfield with Kerry's Bryan Sheehan, and had to be stretchered off.
In a statement released this afternoon, the Cork County Board said: "Following a scan, it has been confirmed that Cork footballer Ciarán Sheehan suffered a torn cruciate ligament in the Munster final defeat to Kerry.
"The news comes as a huge disappointment to the Cork squad and management, and of course to Ciarán and his club Éire Óg. All in Cork GAA wish him well in his recovery."
The injury rules Sheehan out of Cork's All-Ireland title defence, which will begin later this month in the qualifiers.
The 20-year-old is the second Cork forward to sustain such an injury this season. Colm O'Neill has been sidelined since damaging his cruciate knee ligament in a league game against Galway in March.
