Celtic chairman Brian Quinn believes the trauma of Bratislava has inspired Gordon Strachan and his team to Champions League success so far this season.
The Hoops claimed a fine 3-0 win over Benfica last night to move five points clear of the Portuguese side and FC Copenhagen into second place in the Group F table.
Kenny Miller scored twice before Stephen Pearson added a late third at Celtic Park.
The win was in marked contrast to last season where the Glasgow giants crashed out of European competition after failing to claw back a five-goal deficit from the first leg of the second qualifying round tie against Artmedia Bratislava.
Quinn is refusing to get too carried away with trips to Lisbon and Denmark and the visit of Manchester United still to come.
But the Celtic chief is convinced the nightmare 5-0 defeat in Strachan’s first competitive match in charge has added to the determination within the squad this term.
Quinn said: “We are not counting our chickens yet but it was a big step forward last night.
“I think the whole team played well from top to bottom, there wasn’t a weak performance on the field.
“Last year was a shock, I think this year Gordon and the team are determined to show what they are capable of.”
Now the Celtic board are willing to match the success on the field with as much support for Strachan as possible.
Quinn told BBC Radio Five Live: “It is a big, big boost to your revenue if you can do well in the Champions League.
“I think Gordon is very settled and very happy, the man is loving every moment.
“That would be our intention, to keep Gordon happy and build on what he has achieved so far.”
