Telecoms group T-Mobile today said its plans to focus on more profitable contract customers and wireless internet services was helping its UK business thrive despite strong competition.

The German-owned firm saw a 277,000 drop in the number of pre-pay customers in the first quarter of the year, but signed up 18% more higher-paying contract customers.

The shift to a more profitable customer base helped drive revenues per subscriber up to £20 (€29.41) per month, ahead 12% on last year, although the group recorded net customer losses - new customers, less those leaving the group - of 171,000 for the quarter as the number of new contract sign-ups failed to offset pre-pay customers switching away from T-Mobile.
