Despite his unavailability until the summer, John O'Brien has been chosen by county champions Toomevara to captain the Tipperary senior hurlers in 2007.

O'Brien is still recovering from the leg injuries (a dislocated and fractured hip) he suffered in a car accident before Christmas and is not expected to link up with Babs Keating's Tipp panel until May.

The 25-year-old forward, who will be off his crutches in a few weeks, is targeting his on-field return for the Munster SHC final on July 8 if Tipp qualify by beating Limerick in the semi-finals.

For the remainder of the National League, Toomevara player Benny Dunne, who captained Tipp in 2005, is expected to skipper the Premier County side.

Should Keating not select a Toomevara clubman on the starting 15, a vice captain, nominated by the Tipperary county board, will assume the captaincy.

Eamonn Corcoran, the 2001 AllStar wing back from the JK Brackens club, led Tipperary last weekend against Limerick after his name was drawn from a hat by Keating.
