Ireland is giving €11.2 million euro in aid to international crisis zones. The announcement has been made on the eve of a major aid summit in Mexico.

The Minister of State at the Department of Foreign Affairs, Liz O’Donnell unveiled the aid plan ahead of tomorrow’s International Conference on Financing and Development in Monterrey.

The package will primarily focus on Angola, Central Asia, Sudan, Somalia, Palestine, Bangladesh and Eritrea.

She said: "On St Patrick’s Day we celebrate the role played by Irish people in countries throughout the world, including our aid workers, peacekeepers and missionaries. It is a happy conincidence that at this special time, we are marking the beginning of this important world conference by reiterating our own commitment as a nation to helping others less fortunate."
