The mother of Northern Ireland Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness died today after a short illness.

The mother of Northern Ireland Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness died today after a short illness.

Peggy McGuinness, 84, died at home this morning, Sinn Féin said. She was from Elmwood Street, Derry.

Friends and family are comforting Mr McGuinness.

Sinn Fein has yet to make a statement, but SDLP leader Mark Durkan, who is also from Derry, says he has offered his sincere condolences to her family.

Mr Durkan said Mrs McGuinness was a very kindly woman with real charm.
