Alex Ferguson sprang a major surprise this evening by leaving Wayne Rooney out of Manchester United’s starting line-up to face Inter Milan.
Instead, Ferguson went with Dimitar Berbatov as a lone front-man in a side containing Jonny Evans and John O’Shea, who both passed late fitness tests.
In leaving out Rooney, United were protecting their back four as they tried to find a way of overcoming Jose Mourinho for only the second time in 13 attempts.
