A commercial helicopter crashed north of the Iraqi capital today, killing nine people, the US Embassy said.

Officials had no immediate information on what caused the crash at 1.45pm (10.45 Irish time), about 12 miles north of Baghdad.

An embassy official confirmed nine people were killed, but provided no additional information on the casualties.

US military officials said the helicopter was contracted by the US Department of Defence, but the embassy could not confirm that.

The embassy official said it was an MI-8 helicopter, chartered from Washington-based SkyLink Air and Logistic Support.
