Soccer: Fans back Hoddle swoop

Tottenham’s bid to bring back former midfield maestro Glenn Hoddle as a replacement for George Graham has been greeted with predictable delight by the White Hart Lane faithful.

Tottenham’s bid to bring back former midfield maestro Glenn Hoddle as a replacement for George Graham has been greeted with predictable delight by the White Hart Lane faithful.

A Spurs legend - and double FA Cup winner - from his playing days in the late 1970s and 80s, the 42-year-old Southampton boss yesterday held talks with new owners ENIC.

And Tottenham Action Group spokesman Mark Jacobs is convinced that the former England chief is the right man for the job.

He said: "Obviously he knows the club from inside to out and we’ve got the situation where he understands the history, heritage and tradition of the club.

"He’s certainly Tottenham through and through and he would probably be number one on most Tottenham supporters’ hit list.

"We hope that if he does join he can bring us the success which we desperately crave.

"He’s had an element of success with England, and also with the clubs that he has managed in the past - Chelsea, Swindon and obviously with Southampton now.

"He’s got Southampton from a situation where they were perennial relegation strugglers to mid table and potentially pushing on to Europe.

"So, hopefully, he can take it one stage further with us and get us up into the top three."

If Hoddle does complete his switch from The Dell to north London in the next 24 hours he will face the daunting prospect of two derby clashes with Arsenal in his first week in charge.

Spurs travel to Highbury for a Premiership match on Saturday and then face their arch-rivals in an FA Cup semi-final showdown at Old Trafford a week on Sunday.

"The timing is somewhat of a concern and it is a real baptism of fire, sink or swim," added Jacob.

"But I’m sure if he does take over he probably won’t tinker too much with the squad initially and the two games against Arsenal would be very, very interesting for Glenn Hoddle."

Southampton Independent Supporters Association leader Nick Illingsworth has urged Hoddle to stay put.

He said: "My personal view is that Hoddle is making a big mistake going, he has got it all here.

"It’s heart versus head. Hoddle played the game as a player with his head but he’s making this decision with his heart and perhaps it will be the wrong one."
