PSNI battle mob violence

Police used CS spray and batons to control a mob after trouble flared in Derry today.

Officers drew the weapons as they tried to make arrests after two men were beaten in a suspected sectarian assault at a house in the city.

Five men were detained following the violence outside a filling station on Glendermott Road at around 2am.

Earlier several men split off from a crowd in Bentley Terrace and broke into a house in the area, a PSNI spokeswoman said.

Two men inside were attacked by the intruders and needed hospital treatment for minor injuries.

The gang who allegedly targeted them then went to the garage where a crowd had gathered, according to police.

But the gathering became aggressive when officers arrived to question the men suspected of the break-in.

“At this point a number of police officers were forced to draw their batons,” the spokeswoman said.

“Police were required to use CS spray to prevent further disorder and enable the arrests to be made.”
