Funeral for Irish jockey killed in fire
A funeral mass and service of thanksgiving will take place today for an Irish apprentice jockey killed in a suspected arson attack.
The family of Jamie Kyne, 18, are inviting everyone in the racing fraternity and all who knew the young jockey to join them for the service at St Leonard and St Mary’s Roman Catholic Church in Malton, North Yorkshire.
Mr Kyne, from Co Galway died when fire ripped through a flats complex in Norton, near Malton, in the early hours of September 5.
Fellow jockey Jan Wilson, 19, from Forfar in Scotland, was also killed in the fire, which police are treating as suspicious.
There were thought to be six people in the flats in Buckrose Court when the fire broke out.
Earlier, they had been celebrating after receiving their “pool money” from a local trainer, witnesses said.
Apprentice jockeys Mr Kyne and Miss Wilson were on the second floor.
Their friend and fellow apprentice, Ian Brennan, was also in the second-floor flat and jumped to safety when the fire ripped through the building.
The 20-year-old was later released from hospital and went on to ride at Thirsk.
A fourth person in the block, Irish apprentice jockey Dean Pratt, was also taken to York District Hospital and treated for burns and smoke inhalation.
A 37-year-old man who was arrested by North Yorkshire Police in connection with the blaze remains on police bail.
Police are now waiting for the results of a forensic examination of the scene.
