Sir Rembrandt could reappear in the Hennessy Cognac Gold Cup following his victory at Cheltenham at the weekend.
The 11-year-old, placed in two Gold Cups, showed his former sparkle when making a winning debut for Victor Dartnall after leaving Robert Alner’s yard in May.
His new trainer is now considering the big staying handicap chase at Newbury on Saturday week, for which Sir Rembrandt is a best-priced 25-1.
Sir Rembrandt was only allotted 8st 12lb but a 6lb penalty would take him to 9st 4lb and the weights could rise substantially as the top two, Kauto Star and Exotic Dancer, are likely to give the race a miss, with both due to turn out in the Betfair Chase at Haydock on Saturday.
“I haven’t made my mind up yet. Obviously we are considering the Hennessy, but we will see,” said the Barnstaple-based handler.
Dartnall will give Sir Rembrandt an entry in the Coral Welsh National at Chepstow on December 27 but is unlikely to run the horse in both races.
“He’ll be entered in it but I wouldn’t think he’d go for both, it would be one or the other,” he added.
