Spain could stage the next IAAF World Cup in two years’ time after the sport’s world governing body revealed the United States has declined the opportunity to stage the 2006 meeting.
Los Angeles was expected to become the first US city to ever stage a major IAAF competition at the Home Depot Centre in Carson.
But the local organisers were unable to make a guarantee to the IAAF that taxes would not have be paid on the substantial prize money being offered.
The IAAF confirmed that Spain, which successfully hosted the last World Cup, has expressed its intention to bid for the event.
