Roger Federer won his first match in this year’s BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells.

The second-seeded Swiss, winner of this event three times previously, defeated Igor Andreev 7-5 7-6 (7/4).

Federer, given a bye in the first round, did not have things all his own way against the Russian but prevailed to set up a third round match against Juan Ignacio Chela – 4-6 7-5 6-2 conqueror of Germany’s Philipp Petzschner.

Number three Novak Djokovic had few problems against Andrey Golubev, seeing off the Italy-based Kazhakstan-born player 6-0 6-4.

Andy Roddick also progressed, defeating fellow American James Blake 6-3 7-5. His next opponent will be Davis Cup team-mate John Isner, who defeated Brazil’s Ricardo Mello 6-3 7-6 (7/2).

There were also wins for Tomas Berdych, Ryan Harrison, Jurgen Melzer, Richard Gasquet, Viktor Troicki, Michael Llodra, Stanislas Wawrinka, Thomaz Bellucci, Ernests Gulbis, Marin Cilic and Milos Raonic.

In the women’s event, two-time champion Kim Clijsters was far from her best in her match against Sara Errani – but won 6-3 2-6 6-4.

Francesca Schiavone, Ana Ivanovic, Marion Bartoli, Shahar Peer, Yanina Wickmayer and Dominika Cibulkova also progressed – the latter after a three-set encounter with Vera Zvonareva which lasted three hours and eight minutes.
