Cork City Council backs Páirc Uí Chaoimh redevelopment

Cork City Council has voted 17-11 in favour of Cork GAA's proposal to purchase land for the redevelopment of Páirc Uí Chaoimh.

Councillors narrowly backed the proposal, which will see the City Council grant the GAA six-and-a-half acres to allow for redevelopment of the crumbling stadium, while a Centre of Excellence and an all-weather pitch will also be added.

Last week, Cork City manager Joe Gavin called on city councillors to reject some of the GAA's plans, saying that the Council was willing to part with two acres, but not what the GAA were seeking.

At the heart of the conflict is the Council's plan for a public park in the area, which was deemed as essential for the proposed multi-billion euro Cork docklands redevelopment.

The stadium, which opened in 1976, currently features one covered stand, one open stand and two terraces behind each goal which can fit around 20,000 spectators.

When completed, the redeveloped stadium is expected to cater for 60,000 spectators.
