Chelsea included Michael Essien in their defence, pressed into service despite a groin injury after Jose Mourinho was left without defenders Ricardo Carvalho and Paulo Ferreira.

Liverpool had Jermaine Pennant, not even taken to Toulouse in midweek for their Champions League tie, on the right and John Arne Riise on the left of midfield while Fernando Torres was preferred to Peter Crouch up front.
