Adams: SF not part of conspiracy to protect child abusers

Gerry Adams says Sinn Féin is not part of any conspiracy to protect child abusers.

The Sinn Féin leader spoke in Belfast this afternoon, where he addressed claims made against his party, regarding the case of Belfast woman Maíria Cahill.

Mr Adams insisted he did all he could to support Maíria Cahill saying that Sinn Féin acted in good faith.

Ms Cahill claims she was raped as a teenager by a leading republican and was later interrogated by the IRA.

Earlier this week, the Taoiseach Enda Kenny questioned Gerry Adams on whether suspected child abusers were moved into the Republic of Ireland.

Deputy Adams denied any knowledge of this and renewed his appeal to anyone who may have information to come forward.

He claimed the allegations made against his party have been seized upon by Sinn Féin's political opponents, accusing them of furthering their own "narrow political agendas".

But Fianna Fáil Leader Micheál Martin dismissed those comments saying the Sinn Féin leader still has questions to answer.

Mairia Cahill has said she fears for her safety following an "online campaign of vilification".

She has told the Belfast Telegraph that she has moved home four times and has been forced to flee to the Republic of Ireland where she is living at a secret address.

Meanwhile, the solicitor of the four people accused of interrogating Ms Cahill over her rape claims says he will not allow them to meet Enda Kenny.

Peter Madden says a meeting with the Taoiseach would undermine the review currently being carried out by the prosecution service in the North.
