Ryan Moore rates hot favourite Scorpion as the main danger to his mount Hard Top in tomorrow’s Ladbrokes St Leger at Doncaster.
Last season’s champion apprentice is expecting a bold show from the colt trained by Sir Michael Stoute, who only needs a Leger success for a full set of Classic triumphs.
“From what I understand Sir Michael’s got him in excellent form and we are expecting nothing but a decent run from him,” said Moore, 21.
“I worked him last Wednesday and he gave me a good feel. He did a nice gallop and I’m looking forward to getting back on him on Saturday.
“He’s as versatile as they come so I’m not overly concerned if there’s a lot more rain.
“I would have to say he has the beating of every other horse in the field with the possible exception of Scorpion.
“I think that one [Scorpion] is the biggest danger but we’ll have to wait and see.”
Moore partnered Hard Top to victory in a Lingfield maiden in July, while Mick Kinane was on board when winning the Great Voltigeur Stakes at York last month from the David Elsworth-trained The Geezer.
The latter’s rider Richard Quinn, with two Leger wins to his credit on Snurge (1990) and Millenary (2000), said: “I’ve not sat on him since the Great Voltigeur but he’s in really good order and I am expecting a big run from him.
“He goes far better with a bit of cut in the ground and I think there is more rain forecast overnight, so that will be just the ticket.
“I’ve absolutely no concerns whatsoever about him getting the trip. He’s got a big heart and bags of stamina, so that won’t be a problem.
“That was a good run last time and the Great Voltigeur is always a good trial for the Leger – we’ve got everything crossed he can progress again tomorrow.”
Clive Brittain cannot understand why his runner Hattan is complete outsider with the sponsors at 50-1.
“He has been drifting in the betting. I don’t know why. I fancy him,” said Brittain, who has won the Leger twice with Julio Mariner (1978) and User Friendly (1992).
“I’m delighted with him. As far as his preparation is concerned it couldn’t have gone any better if he had been favourite for the race. He is in great condition.”
