The president of the High Court has expressed concern at the high level of fees charged by a solicitor in a personal injuries case.

Mr Justice Nicholas Kearns overturned a ruling allowing €324,000 in costs to Keane Solicitors in Eyre Square in Galway.

He also disallowed €14,000 in fees for what were billed as "suicide abatement" calls.

Judge Kearns said the charges should never have been approved by the taxing master, who rules on legal fees.

The case, which lasted some 15 years, concerned a young man who was hit by a car when he was seven years old.
