Eleven people were killed and three are still missing in flash floods that hit northern and eastern Romania, submerging roads, farms and houses.

Nine of the deaths occurred in the northern county of Suceava where flash floods on Saturday swept away people in the village of Arbore. Among the drowned were an 18-month-old baby and a 79-year-old man. Three people are still missing there, the interior ministry said.

Two men died yesterday in the village of Tibrinu in eastern Romania after flash floods hit the area. Their bodies were discovered in a nearby lake, said Petre Trandafir, head of civil authorities in the region.

About 300 houses were flooded and a bridge collapsed in Constanta county, Trandafir said.

Flooding in the Black Sea port of Constanta left water more than three feet deep in some places in the city yesterday.

Almost 70 communities in 12 counties were affected in the latest flooding the interior ministry said.

Last month, seven people died in flooding in northern Romania. Earlier this year, about 13,000 residents were evacuated from their homes in southern Romania after the Danube River, fed by melting snow and rainfall in central Europe, caused widespread flooding.
