Canavan and Gardiner win GAA Player of Month awards

Tyrone footballer Peter Canavan and Cork hurler John Gardiner have been named as the Vodafone GAA Players of the Month for June.

Tyrone footballer Peter Canavan and Cork hurler John Gardiner have been named as the Vodafone GAA Players of the Month for June.

Thirty-four-year-old Canavan scored 1-7 in the Ulster semi-final during the month and set up two more goals as Tyrone booked a place in the final.

He also broke the all-time scoring record in the Ulster championship, which had been held by Down's Paddy Doherty since 1971.

Gardiner, meanwhile, was man of the match in Cork's Munster final victory over Tipperary.
