Moscow Flies again

Former Champion Chase hero Moscow Flyer got the biggest cheer of the day when bounding to victory on his return to the racecourse in the 18th running of the Diageo Ireland Punchestown Charity Sweepstakes today.

Former Champion Chase hero Moscow Flyer got the biggest cheer of the day when bounding to victory on his return to the racecourse in the 18th running of the Diageo Ireland Punchestown Charity Sweepstakes today.

Jessica Harrington's 13-year-old came out of retirement to raise awareness for kidney research and looked a picture of health going down to post under the trainer's 17-year-old daughter, Kate.

Never far from the head of affairs coming back in the two-mile contest, his young rider could afford herself a Barry Geraghty-type look around turning for home, with her partner absolutely full off running.

He sauntered past long-time leader Killeen Castle and held on comfortably from John James as the crowd of over 32,000, most of whom had stayed on for the race, went wild.

Harrington senior said: "I don't think any horse of mine has had such a big cheer. This is just as good as any of his big-race victories.

"Kate was so cool, and it's all thanks to Barry (Geraghty, the horse's regular partner in the past) who walked the course with her and told her to sit fourth or fifth and when to make a move.

"She's done a lot of running and been in the gym, but she was pretty fit from event riding and so on.

"Moscow's had his proper farewell here now - but he might have to come back again next year."

The victorious rider said: "That was absolutely great. I got a good start, but all the other horses suddenly came round me and I was a bit boxed in.

"But when we went round the first bend I saw a nice gap on the rail and went for that. After that I was always happy.

"When I walked the track with Barry he said everyone drifts wide on the second-last bend so turn him sharp. I did that and made several lengths on the leader there and up the straight he just kept responding and flew home.

"I was watching on the big screen and could see another horse coming, but Moscow wasn't going to be caught. It was amazing the way everyone cheered him."

The final-flight fall of Catch Me left Glencove Marina a clear winner of the Land Rover Champion Novice Hurdle.

Catch Me took it up three out under Barry Geraghty with Glencove Marina quickly in pursuit and the pair looked set for a thrilling battle to the line.

The 11-4 joint-favourites were neck and neck running down to the last only for Catch Me to crash out in what looked a particularly nasty fall.

That left Glencove Marina clear to score a double for Willie Mullins and Ruby Walsh, with Kalderon chasing him home five lengths in arrears.

Mullins said: "He'll probably go novice chasing next year, so I don't think he'll run again (this season) and he'll have a break now.

"I thought he had gone to the front too soo, but Ruby said he had a lot of horse under him.

"I couldn't believe how well he was travelling in Fairyhouse last time and that told me we might have serious horse on our hands - and this shows we have."

Catch Me happily got up from his fall and was led back to the stables.

Mullins had drawn a rare blank for the first three days of the Festival but Alexander Taipan ended the drought in the Betfair.com Novice Handicap Chase.

Walsh's mount was one of three who jumped the final fence upsides and the 4-1 favourite displayed tremendous courage to get the better of Anothercoppercoast by a neck and land the €110,000 event.

Mullins said: "That was an exceptional ride from Ruby Walsh. The horse did nothing to help, but Ruby was excellent.

"I'll put him away now and he'll stay chasing next season.

"I'm not sure how high up the ladder he will go but I thought he was Grade One class, so we'll step him up and see how he goes."

Enda Bolger's name is synonymous with the unique banks course at Punchestown and the Co Limerick trainer added another trophy to his cabinet as Lonesome Day struck in the Newbridge Silverware Chase.

Fresh from his amazing 10th success in the La Touche Cup, Bolger was back in the winner's enclosure as his 7-1 chance held on gamely under Nina Carberry.

The seven-year-old only took the lead over the final fence, but was brave in front and broke his maiden tag at the 18th time of asking with a length-and-a-quarter defeat of Glenduff Bridge.

Bolger said: "I quite fancied Darby Wall, but JT McManara thinks he broke a blood vessel.

"Miss Carberry is something else - she has had three rides for us this week and had two seconds and this winner."

Tommy Carberry sent out his first winner for 173 days as Andrew Duff got Kings Glen up in the dying strides to claim the Ellen Construction Conyngham Cup Handicap Chase.

The 33-1 shot finished with a full head of steam on the stands side to surge past Petertheknot and Dublin Hunter and record a head victory.

The veteran trainer said: "Andrew gave him a smashing ride as I told him to be handy and just let the horse enjoy himself.

"He likes ground on the easy side of good and Punchestown have gone a great job watering the track."
