Kind faces crucial Curragh test

Roger Charlton is hoping that Kind can bounce back to form at the Curragh on Sunday after a poor run at York last time.

Should the four-year-old daughter of Danehill put in another disappointing performance in the Group Three Patrick P. O’Leary Memorial Phoenix Sprint Stakes, she will then be retired to the paddocks.

“She has won six races including two Listed races, with one of those coming this year whe she beat Indian Maiden at Nottingham,” the Beckhampton trainer told At The Races.

“We went Leopardstown after that and it was a muddling race. She was almost too well drawn and made the running, then dropped back and then made the running again.

“It is a funny track at Leopardstown, you are on the turn, and it is possible that it just didn’t suit her.

“Having said that she was beaten by a good filly of Barry (Hills’) La Cucaracha. We saw that she is a good filly when she won under top weight in a handicap the other day, so it was no disgrace.

“The only disappointing run she has ever put up was last time at York and I have no excuse for that. She never seemed to go at all and was beaten fair and square.

“The York ground is funny ground and had been well trampled on, as we know, after the Ascot at York meeting.

“I wouldn’t like to use that as an excuse but sometimes horses don’t like York – the walk to the paddock – but we are going to try at the Curragh on Sunday and should she run a disappointing race, she will be gracefully retired having got a good record.

“On the other hand, on her best form, she has a good chance.”

Another filly who is looking to redeem her reputation is Damson, who is wearing blinkers for the first time and dropping back in trip after failing to reproduce her excellent form of last season.

David Wachman’s charge was a leading juvenile performer, winning her first four races culminating in the Group One Phoenix Stakes over the course and distance on this corresponding card. However, she has not tasted success since then.

Things have not gone right for her this season and she missed the 1000 Guineas at Newmarket after scoping dirty a few days before the race.

She then failed to make the frame on returning to action in both the Irish 1000 Guineas and Coronation Stakes.

“She has been a bit disappointing and we will see where we stand with her after Sunday. She has worked well once in blinkers so we are giving them a try,” said Wachman.

Damson faces a stiff task under the race conditions having to give weight to all but one of her 14 rivals in this sprint for three-year-olds and upwards.

Jim Bolger’s Democratic Deficit, winner of two Group Threes this term and third to Dubawi in the Irish 2000 Guineas, carries 1lb more than Damson.

Kind is one of eight British challengers with Balmont, Baron’s Pit, Chookie Heiton, Fayr Jag, Kodiac, Indian Maiden and Obe Gold completing the raiding party.
