Man handed five-year sentence for raping student

A 23-year-old man has today been jailed for five years for raping a college student in a laneway in Dublin city.

Hong Zhi Yang, with an address at Camden Street in Dublin 2, pleaded guilty at the Central Criminal Court to the attack on October 29, 2010

The woman was on her way home from a nightclub when Hong Dri Yang dragged her down a laneway and raped her.

A person living in a nearby flat heard her screams and alerted gardaí, who arrested the 23-year-old Chinese student at the scene and found his victim semi-naked, crying and huddled on the ground.

Today passing sentence Mr Justice Paul Carney said in his experience it was the first time rape had ever been committed by the large Chinese community that has settled in this country.

He said he accepted the accused's claim that when he lived in China he never had more than one bottle of beer at a time.

Unfortunately, said the judge, on the night of October 29 the 23-year-old drank too much causing him to behave like many Irish citizens of previous good character.

He imposed an eight-year sentence, with the last three years suspended.
