Campaigning continues today ahead of the impending general election, with the various political parties battling for media attention on the main policy issues.

Fine Gael will unveil plans to expand the number of gardaí in the country to 15,000, with party leader Enda Kenny also visiting Portlaoise General Hospital to highlight the Government's performance on health.

Elsewhere, Fianna Fáil is to announce its plans for jobs and industry, while Labour leader Pat Rabbitte will be in Cork to publish a 10-point plan for the city.

The Green Party, meanwhile, is taking a biofuel bus on a tour of the Carlow-Kilkenny constituency, where deputy leader Mary White hopes to win a Dáil seat.

Despite the importance of many of the issues involved, the campaign so far has been severely overshadowed by the controversy surrounding the Taoiseach's finances in the 1990s.

His advisers are set to spend the coming days drafting a statement explaining the latest revelations, which almost caused the PDs to pull out of government over the weekend.
