The grandfather of the baby girl who died after her expectant mother was turned away from Monaghan Hospital has called on Health Minister Micheál Martin to resign in light of the current budget crisis in Irish hospitals.

The grandfather of the baby girl who died after her expectant mother was turned away from Monaghan Hospital has called on Health Minister Micheál Martin to resign in light of the current budget crisis in Irish hospitals.

James Livingstone, who met Mr Martin last night, said the minister must take the blame for the current crisis.

"The man is definitely not capable of running the Department of Health," he said.

Mr Livingstone's granddaughter, Bronagh, died shortly after she was born prematurely in an ambulance en route to Cavan Hospital.

Bronagh's mother had originally travelled to Monaghan Hospital, but was turned away because the hospital's maternity unit was closed down.
