Detonators and fireworks hidden under a load of coal blew up during an inspection of the truck that was carrying them in southern China, killing nine people and injuring 14 others, the official Xinhua News Agency said on Wednesday.

The blast on Tuesday at a traffic inspection post in Jiangxi province occurred as inspectors were probing the load of coal with steel rods, Xinhua said. Detonators and fireworks hidden under the coal exploded, it said.

The truck driver was among those killed, it said. Three of those hurt were badly wounded. The report didn’t say why the fireworks and detonators were buried under the coal.

In another unrelated accident, 10 people were killed and 18 injured when a bus hit a coal truck on Monday on a road in Sichuan province, southwest China, Xinhua said.

The truck had burst a tyre because it was overloaded and was stopped on the road’s overtaking lane, Xinhua said.
