Limerick goalkeeper Albert Shanahan picked up his second M Donnelly All-Ireland Poc Fada title this evening over the Annaverna mountain course in Ravensdale, County Louth.
The South Liberties clubman won with a tally of 58 pocs, having first claimed the crown at the Dundalk racecourse in 2001.
Wexford 'keeper Damien Fitzhenry, a two-time All-star, also tallied 58 pocs, but Shanahan took first as his last poc finished 17 metres over the finishing line as opposed to Fitzhenry's mark of ten.
Graham Clarke of Down was also in contention for long periods, but the difficult conditions saw him fall away. A stiff breeze had prevented any hope of beating Tipperary goalkeeper Brendan Cummins' course record of 48 pocs, set twelve months ago.
Former soccer international and Dublin minor hurler Niall Quinn predictably finished last of the twelve competitors, but still completed the 5km-course in a respectable 70 pocs.
Clare's Denise Lynch took the honours in the camogie competition.
