Consumer prices in June were 0.2% lower than the previous month, official figures have revealed today.

Consumer prices in June were 0.2% lower than the previous month, official figures have revealed today.

However, when compared to the same time last year, prices were 1.7% higher, according to a CSO report.

The biggest changes in the last 12 months were increases of 9.4% in education costs, transport was up 5.7% on June 2011, while alcohol and tobacco prices were 4.3% higher.

Amongst the most significant changes between May and June of this year, was a decrease in clothing and footwear of 4.2%, due to the traditional summer sales.

The cost of electricity, gas and other fuels also fell in June when compared to the previous month by 0.9%, as the price of home heating oil and housing dropped.

There were increases of 0.7% in both the cost of Transport and Hotels & Restaurants last month when compared to May, due to rising airfares and an increase in the price of hotel accommodation.
