Inspections at jumps venues

National Hunt fans could draw a blank tomorrow with the day’s action over the sticks at Warwick and Sedgefield under threat from the cold snap.

Officials at both venues have called precautionary 7.30am inspections due to the threat of freezing fog and frost respectively.

However, Warwick are upbeat about the prospects for their meeting and clerk of the course Fiona Needham said: “We are perfectly raceable today and very optimistic about tomorrow’s meeting.

“The only snag is the forecast is for some patches of freezing fog. Temperatures are due to fall to minus two overnight, which wouldn’t be a problem unless the sun couldn’t come through in the morning.”

Sedgefield are also confident their meeting will go ahead despite the County Durham venue being subject to freezing overnight temperatures.

Clerk of the course Gemma Charrington said: “We’ve called the inspection in case temperatures do get down to the minimum of minus four degrees that some forecasts have predicted.

“I’d say we’d get down to minus one degrees.

“We would be raceable today and we are keeping our fingers crossed for a positive outcome.”

Should Warwick and Sedgefield be abandoned, the action will be restricted to a six-race card on the all-weather at Southwell.

The weather has also put Lingfield’s jumps meeting on Wednesday in jeopardy and with parts of the hurdle and chase courses still frozen, an inspection has been called at noon on Tuesday.

Clerk of the course Neil Mackenzie Ross is keeping his fingers crossed that conditions do not deteriorate overnight prior to the inspection at the Surrey venue.

He said: “There’s one or two bits of frost around on both courses and we are hoping temperatures do not drop too severely over the next 24 hours.

“I have been receiving conflicting reports about what the outlook is going to be so I cannot offer an opinion about whether racing will be on or not.”

The seven-race card is set to commence at 12.15pm with three hurdle races, three chase races and one National Hunt Flat event.

The going is currently good to soft, frozen in places on both the hurdle and chase course.
