Motorsport: Galligan is Peugeout Super 106 Champion

Rory Galligan, co-driven by Kerryman, Paul Nagle has won the Peugeot Super 106 Cup category of the Banbury Rally and has clinched the 2001 title. Galligan, from Oldcastle, was in superb form all through today's 14 stages.

The rally concluded with at Silverstone where Galligan ran out winner by some 20 seconds. Fellow Irish crew, Gary Jennings - in his first full season of rallying - co-driven by James O'Brien were second with Ryan Champion third.

In the Formula Rally section, Justin Dale (Peugeot) took the event win by some ten seconds and also championship victory from the Ford of Martin Rowe. Mark/Higgins/Mike Gibson (VW Polo) were third.

Dublin's, Max McKillen (Citroen Saxo) was fourth today.

The sixth round of the Hewison Championship, that took place at Mondello Park, was won by current championship leader, JJ Farrell. He dominated the day's 12 tests and slackened his pace on the closing stages to take a comfortable victory.

Dermot Carnegie 13.3 seconds adrift was second with Eamonn Byrne finishing third. Sam Johnston, like the top three, driving a Mini Special, was fourth with the top six being completed by Paddy Power (Mini Moke) and Colm Earey (Nova).

It was Farrell's fourth win of the current campaign. The seventh round takes place in Graiguecullen, County Carlow tomorrow.
