Bob Estes, overlooked by Jack Nicklaus for America’s Presidents Cup side on Monday, eagled the 497-yard second to take the early lead in the $6m (€5m) NEC world championship in Akron today.
Estes turned in a superb four under par 31 after further birdies at the seventh and ninth, but Westwood moved into third spot when he sank a 10-footer for a matching two on the seventh.
Dubliner Padraig Harrington birdied the first and Scotland’s Colin Montgomerie’s two-putted the second to be one under as well.
