Rock group The Darkness will perform at the sixth annual Meteor Music Awards in Dublin, it was confirmed today.

The spandex-clad band, which scooped the Meteor Award for Best International Group in 2004, will take to the stage in Dublin’s Point Theatre on February 2, 2006.

The band’s debut album, Permission to Land, sold over 3.5 million copies world-wide – achieving multi-platinum status in Ireland.

The Co Down comedian, Patrick Kielty, will host the star-studded event for the second time in February.

Kielty said the 2006 acts would be bigger and better than other years which saw US rapper Snoop Dogg, The Thrills and Rolling Stones guitarist Ronnie Wood grace the stage.

Around 17 Meteor music awards will be presented at the awards ceremony.

Music fans will be able to vote for their favourite stars or band in six public categories – including Best Irish DJ and Best Irish Band – while the Hope for 2006 Award will be voted for by 2FM listeners.

Some of this year’s nominations include U2, The Corrs, Hal and BellX1 for Best Irish Band and Joe Chester, Damien Dempsey and Christy Moore are vying for Best Irish Male.

The entrants in the Best Irish Album category include Dave Couse and the Impossible ’The World Should Know’ and U2 ’How to Dismantle An Atomic Bomb’, while Humanzi and Delorentos are in the running for the Best Irish New Act.

The Best Irish Pop Act sees X-Factor singers the Conway Sisters, Ronan Keating, former Westlife star Brian McFadden, Tabby, Westlife and Zoo going head to head.

Tickets for the Meteor Awards are available to win through competitions in newspapers, on radio, TV and through texting.
