Takeover talk boosts Hammers

West Ham manager Alan Pardew today welcomed a proposed £200m (€300m) takeover from Iranian-born businessman Kia Joorabchian as proof the club is on the up.

Joorabchian, the head of London-based consortium Media Sports Investment, has plans to transform West Ham into “one of the top teams in the country”.

He is lining up a bid that would value West Ham at £45m, clear £30m of debt and inject another £100m into the coffers at Upton Park.

Pardew, who is keeping his distance from the politics of top-level negotiations, views the interest as a clear indication that West Ham’s future is bright.

“For us as a squad it’s a positive thing that people want to invest in the club. Someone is looking at us and thinking ‘something is happening there’,” Pardew said today.

“I don’t want to grow too many headlines about the takeover but of course I could do a lot with £100m.

“There is a good feeling around the place and that is the feeling we want to keep. Whatever happens, if anything it is going to be a positive for us. And a positive means a good thing.”

Pardew has no problems with the current board at Upton Park and is proud of the way he has worked closely with them to rebuild the club and bring West Ham back into the Barclays Premiership.

“The board have worked extremely hard to try and correct issues that have gone here in the past,” said Pardew.

“I have tried to help direct the club in where I feel it should be going. I am confident with the board here and I am sure whatever happens the chairman will do what is best for West Ham.

“Whatever happens with that is out of my hands. It is very difficult to comment on this stuff but we find ourselves in a very healthy position.

“When I was at Reading we were losing £250,000 a month. At West Ham it was the same. It is easy to be very critical of a lot of things that have gone on at West Ham and I could be very critical of things that happened before I arrived.

“But we have got a side people believe in. The fans can see what we were trying to do from the start. Now we can move on together. Once we move together as a club we can be a very strong force.”

West Ham chairman Terence Brown, derided for so many years by the supporters, must decide whether any new investment will strengthen the club.

He will listen to “anyone who can help West Ham move forward” and can make a credible bid.

“We are now in a position of strength with exciting, young players coming through the ranks and I don’t want to see all the hard work of the last couple of years go to waste,” he said.

“A short-term gain could be long-term pain, but any proposition will be carefully studied.”

Joorbchian owns a 51% stake in Brazilian club Corinthians, who currently sit on top of the Brazilian league, and he is lauded by their supporters.

And if his actions are as positive as his words, then West Ham supporters might also be singing his praises in the way Chelsea fans do for Roman Abramovich.

Joorbchian said yesterday: “There is no point in buying West Ham unless you are going to turn them into one of the top teams in the country. There is huge potential there and at one point we are going to make a bid, although at the moment we have not done anything.”

West Ham chief executive Paul Aldridge says that as a plc, the club are duty-bound to notify their shareholders if they receive a realistic bid but, up until now, that has not happened.

With £100m in his back pocket, Pardew’s search for a new striker over the summer might have been rather easier than it is.

He has missed out on Peter Crouch, Milan Baros and Emanuel Adebayor but is determined not to let the money he does have – thought to be around £6m - burn a hole in his pocket.

David Bellion was signed on loan from Manchester United yesterday but Pardew sees the lightning-quick Frenchman predominantly as a right-sided midfielder.

“We are definitely short in that area (up front). David Bellion will play on the right side for us. He is not answer I am looking for through the middle but I will get a striker in there. We want to get the best player available.” said Pardew.

For all the headline-grabbing speculation off the pitch over takeovers and plunges into the transfer market, it was on the field that West Ham caught the eye last weekend.

Pardew’s men showed character as they bounced back from a goal down to open their Barclays Premiership campaign with a 3-1 win over Blackburn.

West Ham head up to Newcastle on Saturday determined to keep that momentum going but he expects a tough test at St James’ Park.

“It’s one game and we are not getting carried away, but just want to keep that feel-good factor. We are desperate for another win. I don’t want anyone to think we are resting on our laurels,” he said.

“Every game in this division is a challenge and it will certainly be a challenge to the players and staff to go and perform at St James’ Park.”
