Dr Brendan Cuddihy is expected to be in charge of the Wicklow senior hurlers for their opening game of the 2006 season against Carlow tomorrow.
Confusion has reigned in the Garden county ever since Wexford man Wille Carley stepped down from the managerial post last month after only one year in charge.
Carley was following in the footsteps of Kilcoole native Michael Neary who also resigned immediately after the 2004 campaign, leaving Wicklow without a manager for the Kehoe Cup competition - the exact same crux in which they find themselves in now.
Dr. Cuddihy, a Greystones-based GP who is chairman of the new Hurling Development Committee, is almost certain to take control of the hurlers, on a temporary basis, for tomorrow's Kehoe Cup clash with Carlow in Arklow (throw-in 2.00pm).
Cuddihy was the brains behind a hurling hand protector that was developed in the 1990s and famously worn by South African full-back Andre Joubert during the 1995 Rugby World Cup final.
Wicklow PRO Jack Napier described attendance at training this week as “very good” - a marked difference to this time last year when only ten players showed up at a session in Arklow.
