Fianna Fail chief whip, Minister Martin Brennan, has indicated that the economic slowdown will mean that the government will have to tighten its belt this term.
The Fianna Fail parliamentary party is meeting in Ennis today for its annual ‘think-in'.
With a general election on the horizon, Minister Brennan believes that the coalition can weather the economic storm.
Ireland has been the envy of the world with 11% growth in economic performance, he said.
This will drop to 5 or 6% this year but even so, Ireland will still be the fastest growing economy in the western world.
‘The question is, how do you the slowdown and who is best equipped to manage it?’ said Mr Brennan, adding that Fianna Fail was in the best position to do so.
