Crusaders centre Rua Tipoki will lead the New Zealand Maori in their Churchill Cup defence this month.
Tipoki gains the captaincy with Chiefs lock Jono Gibbes unavailable through injury, and captains a squad including 10 new caps.
Tipoki’s Crusaders team-mate Ross Filipo and outside back Cory Jane are missing, and will likely be included in the New Zealand Pacific Six Nations squad.
The new players include 2007 Super 14 caps Aled de Malmanche, Glen Horton, Jason Kawau, Dwayne Sweeney, Ben May and Isaac Ross.
Only one player – Auckland and Blues loose-forward Angus MacDonald – has been capped at Test level.
New Zealand Maori coach Donny Stevenson said: “This is the beauty of this team – we are able to give young players the opportunity to play international rugby.
“A couple of the new players came to our attention during last year’s Air New Zealand Cup, which highlights the importance and value of this domestic competition.”
“There is an air of excitement about the change of venue. This is new territory for us but that is the exciting challenge. We hope that the strong expat Kiwi community in the UK will come out and support us.”
The Maori take on Canada in Northampton and Ireland A in Exeter ahead of next month’s final.
