Wexford couple find US fame after running marathon together to celebrate turning 80

Wexford couple Kay and Joe O’Regan have appeared on American TV after capturing the hearts of people by finishing the Irish Examiner Cork City Marathon hand in hand to celebrate their 57th wedding anniversary and their 80th year.

Their inspirational story has gone transatlantic with ESPN, Runner's World and the TODAY show in America picking up on their marvellous achievement and interviewing Kay and Joe via phone to highlight their adventurous spirit to American viewers.

The couple, who began running at the relatively ripe age of 49, have a fair few marathons under their belt with Kay running 113 and Joe running 29.

Their marathon running has taken them across the globe running races in America, Australia and across Europe.

Their story has certainly struck a chord with people all over the world with ESPN picking up on the couple’s dogged athleticism and strong relationship.

Runners World have also run a piece on the running couple who celebrated their 80th birthday by running the marathon together on June 6.

The jovial pair who had said that the Cork Marathon was to be their last have reconsidered their retirement from the sport.

According to TODAY Joe said: "There's nothing quite like the thrill you feel when running a race, neither of us can get enough of it."
