Rugby: Gatland confident Ireland can return to form

Ireland coach Warren Gatland insists he is not under any added pressure ahead of tomorrow’s Six Nations clash with Wales at the Millennium Stadium.

Ireland coach Warren Gatland insists he is not under any added pressure ahead of tomorrow’s Six Nations clash with Wales at the Millennium Stadium.

The New Zealander saw his highly-fancied side suffer a mauling by Scotland at Murrayfield last month in a defeat that ended Ireland’s chances of claiming a grand slam.

Any hopes Ireland may have harboured of clinching the Six Nations title are, barring massive points wins against Wales and England a week later, all but over.

Instead, they will enter tomorrow’s match knowing that victory will be enough to secure them second place - anything less and Gatland, whose contract is up for renewal soon, will feel the full weight of unfilled Irish expectations.

But that is an issue the Kiwi coach has not given much consideration.

‘‘I’m not thinking of myself as being under any pressure at all,’’ he said.

‘‘We were all disappointed with the performance against Scotland. But we had a good meeting during the week - all the players were very honest and as the management we put up our hands up to making a couple of mistakes and we think we’ve rectified them.

‘‘As a team I don’t think we could have played any worse than we did against Scotland so for all of us tomorrow is an opportunity to rectify that and get things back on track.

‘‘But all coaches are under some pressure. I’m sure Graham Henry is under a bit of pressure as well. It’s part of the job.’’

Ireland, who make their Millennium Stadium debut tomorrow, have taken no chances in the build up to the match with Gatland banning cameras from his squad’s training sessions.

There had been suspicions that Ireland’s practice drills were closely watched in the build-up to the Scotland clash.

‘‘After the Scotland game there were a few rumours that they had people in Dublin who pretty much knew what we were up to,’’ said Gatland.

‘‘It’s a professional game and we just can’t afford the risks of cameras being there and people looking at what we’re doing - there’s just too much at stake.

‘‘It was fairly uncanny what some of the Scottish players knew about what we were trying to do in Edinburgh and we just can’t afford to take that risk again.

‘‘I know for a fact that there have been teams filmed by opposition sides during training sessions on Friday. It’s something we’re aware of.

‘‘It’s probably a little bit paranoid but if things like this happen you’ve got to take the necessary precautions to make sure the opposition don’t get an opportunity to second guess you.’’

Gatland has called-up flanker David Wallace hoping that the powerful back-rower will asks questions of the Welsh defence.

‘‘It’s the same forward pack that played against France except Eric Miller has come in.

‘‘We want to utilise David Wallace’s ability to carry the ball - he’s outstanding at that.

‘‘He was very good for Munster against Harlequins last weekend and we need to put the ball into the hands of a player of his speed, talent and quality.’’

Wales have not beaten Ireland on home soil since 1983 but Gatland refuses to read too much into this statistic, instead demanding an improved performance from his team.

‘‘We haven’t spoken about our record in Wales all week,’’ he said.

‘‘I’m sure the Welsh may have talked about it but we haven’t. Our display against Scotland wasn’t acceptable and with that knowledge we need to go out and improve tomorrow.’’
