Blair endorses Annan bid to stay on
United Nations secretary general Kofi Annan’s quest for a second term at the top of the organisation today got the backing of British Prime Minister Tony Blair.
Mr Annan met Mr Blair at Downing Street, where Mr Blair told him he was delighted that he was prepared to stand for a second term, and ‘‘totally endorsed’’ his candidature.
Later, Mr Blair’s official spokesman said the Prime Minister thought Mr Annan had been a ‘‘first class’’ secretary general, who had amassed an excellent track record of ‘‘quiet, patient, effective diplomacy’’.
During their talks the two men also discussed the Middle East, and African issues.
