Actress Katie Holmes is set to play Andy Warhol’s drug-addicted muse Edie Sedgwick in new movie Factory Girl, it emerged today.

The Dawson’s Creek star, who recently embarked on a very public relationship with Tom Cruise, is reportedly in talks to star as the ill-fated heiress who squandered her trust fund fortune in just a few months.

Director George Hickenlooper said he could see the 26-year-old as Sedgwick, who died aged 28 after several stays in mental hospitals.

“Katie is not too different from Edie, who arrived in New York as young, innocent, looking for excitement,” he told the New York Daily News.

British actress Sienna Miller was in line to play the original It girl, who died of a barbiturate overdose in 1971.

But she dropped out after landing the role of Celia in a West End production of As You Like It, her spokesman confirmed.

Filming on Factory Girl is scheduled to begin this summer in New York.

Guy Pearce is set to play Warhol while Gwen Stefani will reportedly play fellow factory girl Richie Berlin and her husband, Gavin Rossdale, will play Warhol star Gerard Malanga.
