Hanley answers Connacht final call

Under-21 defender Finian Hanley has answered Galway manager Peter Forde's call for a full-back for Sunday's Connacht SFC final clash with holders Mayo.

Under-21 defender Finian Hanley has answered Galway manager Peter Forde's call for a full-back for Sunday's Connacht SFC final clash with holders Mayo.

The Salthill-Knocknacarra youngster, who helped Galway to their third All-Ireland Under-21 title in May, is to make his first senior championship start, after the full-back position caused Galway some problems against Leitrim last time out.

Hanley played at number three in last weekend's 0-10 to 2-11 challenge match loss to Dublin.

Elsewhere, Galway have been boosted by the return of three-time All-star Padraic Joyce's from an ankle injury. The Killererin full-forward, a sub against Leitrim, is back as captain.

On the down side, Joe Bergin and Sean Armstrong are suffering from slight injuries, and miss out, although corner forward Armstrong, who made his championship debut in the Connacht semi-final, is expected to come off the bench.

Both Galway and Mayo are locked on two wins apiece in the four championship meetings between the sides since 1995. Mayo won the most recent, last year's Connacht semi, 0-18 to 1-9.

Galway (SFC v Mayo): B Donoghue; A Burke, F Hanely, K Fitzgerald; D Meehan, P Clancy, D Burke; B Cullinane, N Coleman; D Savage, M Donnellan, M Clancy; K Comer, P Joyce (capt), M Meehan.
