The trial of the only man charged in connection with the Omagh bombing atrocity was postponed until after Christmas today due to one of the judges falling ill.

Justice Mary O’Halloran SC was admitted to hospital over the weekend forcing the Special Criminal Court trial of Colm Murphy, 49, into an adjournment until the beginning of next year.

Murphy, from Dundalk, Co Louth, denies conspiring to cause an explosion within the state or elsewhere likely to cause loss of life or serious injury to property in February 1998.

Some 29 people, including two unborn twins, died when the fertiliser bomb detonated in a central shopping area in the Co Tyrone market town. A further 200 people were injured.

Presiding judge Mr Justice Barr SC told the Dublin court that the trial would have to be adjourned until January 11.
