Middlesbrough boss Steve McClaren will decide by the end of this week whether to offer Jesper Blomqvist a contract.
The 28-year-old former Manchester United and Everton player has been training with the Riverside outfit for several weeks and played in the club’s friendly clash with Italian side Udinese in Austria last week.
His agent Anders Wallsten claimed he would sign a one year contract later this week, but Boro were giving nothing away today.
“He’s still with us and we will be making a decision by the end of the week,” said a club spokesman.
The Swede first arrived in England from Italian side Parma, via IFK Gothenburg and AC Milan, in July, 1998.
He landed a £4.5m (€7.15m) move to Manchester United, where he largely played a supporting role but picked up winners’ medals in all three competitions as Sir Alex Ferguson’s side marched to the treble in 1999.
But a knee injury saw him reduced to the periphery at Old Trafford before Walter Smith handed him a chance to revive his career on Merseyside.
However, his opportunities became few and far between after Smith was replaced by David Moyes in March and, after missing out on selection for Sweden’s World Cup squad, his misery was compounded in May when he was released by the Toffees.
