Newcastle chairman Freddy Shepherd insisted sacking Bobby Robson was one of the toughest decisions he has had to make.
The Magpies relieved Robson of his duties yesterday after a disappointing start to the new season.
“It was a tough decision to part company with Bobby, one of the toughest decisions I’ve had to make.” Shepherd said.
“We spoke of our admiration for the man in the statement we released on Monday when we announced the decision, and it is very upsetting when you part company with a great guy like Bobby.
“But in situations like this there is no room for sentiment.”
Robson took over at St James’ Park in 1999 and after rescuing the club from the threat of relegation to Division One in his first season in charge he set about building a side which reached the second group phase of the Champions League in 2002-03 and the semi-finals of the UEFA Cup last season.
However, the club have won none of their four Premiership games so far this season.
