UEFA seeding upsets Mourinho

Jose Mourinho watched his side go top of the Barclays Premiership for the first time this season and then turned his wrath on UEFA for ranking them as second seeds in today’s Champions League draw in Monaco.

The Portuguese coach is furious that UEFA rate his side lower than European champions Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester United.

Mourinho finds it difficult to comprehend when the Blues have reached the last four of the competition in the last two seasons.

It means that Chelsea could find themselves placed in a group with the likes of Barcelona, Real Madrid or AC Milan in the first phase of the tournament.

There is even the possibility of a rematch with Liverpool, who knocked them out in the semi-final last season, as the Merseysiders are not protected from the rule which bars teams from facing national rivals in the group stage.

Unhappy Mourinho moaned: “Chelsea have been semi-finalists twice in a row and are the champions of England.

“But we will be seeded second and that means we will face somebody big, big, big. Normally, if you are the top seeds you have it quite easy in the group phase so you can play and control the group from the start of September and what you need to do.

“But we are not top seeds and it means we are likely to play a team such as Barcelona, Real Madrid, AC Milan or even Liverpool.”

UEFA base the seedings on the results over the last five years which is the reason Mourinho finds his side second best.

But Juventus and Porto, who he guided to Champions League glory two seasons ago, are also in the same position as the Londoners.

“I have not studied the co-efficients and it is not for me to say if they are correct or not. But United are a top seed and so are Arsenal and Liverpool. Yet the champions of England are not. I know we will have a big team in our group. Because of this seeding it will be especially hard for us.”

Mourinho though was delighted with his team’s win over West Brom at Stamford Bridge last night. It put them in pole position with three straight wins and no goals conceded.

First-half goals from Frank Lampard, his 50th for the lub, and Joe Cole put Chelsea in control and their dominance was underlined with second-half efforts from Didier Drogba and another from Lampard in his 149th consecutive Premiership appearance.

Lampard, celebrating the birth of daughter Luna days earlier, rocked an imaginary baby as his goal celebration with his team-mates.

He said: “It has been the best week of my life. This has put the icing on it. I am so proud. I heard the fans singing my daughter’s name. She is only three days old. It took me three years before they started singing mine.

I have been staying at the hospital with girlfriend Elen and the baby. I can’t say I have had the best sleep but I am so proud.

“The manager has been fantastic. I didn’t train on Monday and the manager asked if I was okay. Nothing was going to stop me playing. I am really proud of scoring my 50th goal.

“John Terry and I decided before the game how we would celebrate. I have seen it done before but I couldn’t resist it.”

Meanwhile Mourinho was especially happy with the rest of his side which never let Albion get in a shot on goal in the entire 90 minutes.

He added: “We are top because Manchester United and Charlton didn’t play. It doesn’t matter for me – what matters is my team’s improvement. We played better, used the ball and scored goals.

“We had a solid defence and our midfield was very good. I am very happy. But for me it is not really being top.

“I think Albion could do no better. From the way we played in the first half, they could not do better. We moved the ball very well and they couldn’t use it. When they started to be direct my players in defence, William Gallas and John Terry, feel at home. I think Albion had no chance.”

But Albion boss Bryan Robson claimed they matched Chelsea in the opening half only to gift the champions their opening two goals by poor defending.

Robson said: “We created our own problems in the first half. The way we set about the game was good but we gifted Chelsea their first two goals.

“When you give goals away like that to Chelsea, there is no way back with their defence. They did not create much in the first half and didn’t break us down. We gave them the goals.”
