The decision by the Clare County Board to appoint Mike McNamara, instead of Tony Considine, as senior hurling manager for the coming season may result in a comeback for one of the most decorated players in the game.
Former Clare goalkeeper and All-Star Davy Fitzgerald could be set for a comeback after he opted out for 2007 due to a high-profile stand-off with then manager Considine.
Although neither McNamara or Fitzgerald are keen to be drawn on the issue, it is believed that discussions between the pair will take place in the coming weeks.
Speaking on local radio, McNamara has affirmed that any team he will pick will be based on the form of his players.
McNamara was ratified as Clare manager on Tuesday night following a meeting of the selection committee of the Clare County Board and he will be assisted by Alan Cunningham with former Clare players Ollie Baker and Fergie Tuohy expected to be named as selectors.
The Scariff native was fitness coach to the Clare team under the Ger Loughnane's successful term as manager, during which both Baker and Tuohy collected two All-Ireland winners medals each.
McNamara also has experience in inter-county management as a former manager of the Offaly seniors.
Meanwhile, the 36-year old Fitzgerald has been continuing to show he is not passed his sell-by date and will line out for his club Sixmilebridge in their Clare championship quarter-final against Kilmaley this Saturday.
