Five Nato personnel are believed to have been among 12 people killed when a suicide car bomb blast ripped through a convoy and a bus in Afghanistan.

A Nato spokesman said there were casualties among Nato forces in the explosion in Kabul but did not give any details about the dead or injured.

Lieutenant Commander Iain Baxter, of the Royal Navy, said the alliance could not confirm that the convoy was the target of the attack or if it was caught up in a blast aimed somewhere else.

The area around the blast site is home to Afghan government buildings, including the ministry of energy and water.

At least 47 people were wounded in the attack.

No group immediately claimed responsibility.
