Varadkar: Good news 'would help' pass Treaty
The Transport Minister Leo Varadkar has said any good news would help the Government to secure a Yes vote in the EU Treaty referendum.
Mr Varadkar made the comments after his Cabinet colleague Joan Burton said a cut in the price of promissory notes from Europe would help pass the Treaty.
However, the Taoiseach Enda Kenny has said the two issues are completely separate and that Irish people will not be bribed.
Minister Varadkar agreed, but acknowledged that a new deal on the promissory notes may help.
Mr Varadkar said: "That would be true of any good news; if Paypal were to announce another 1,000 jobs, if the ECB cut the interest rate on our mortgages.
"I think that any good news would help to get a yes vote. Things that are extraneous to the referendum affect how people vote. What I don't think though is that it is helpful to connect the two."
